Alessandro Maggiori's collection of ancient drawings

Alessandro Maggiori's collection of old master drawings represents one of the most valuable holdings of the Palazzo Bonafede Museum. Count Maggiori (Fermo, 1764–1834), a cultured collector and scholar with family ties to Monte San Giusto, amassed a rich corpus of drawings throughout his life, which he purchased from Italy's leading art centers. The collection includes highly valuable works, including preparatory studies and sketches by Emilian and Roman masters of the Baroque period, as well as significant examples of Renaissance graphic art. Particularly noteworthy are an autograph drawing by Guercino for the dome of Piacenza Cathedral, studies attributed to Giorgio Vasari, and refined works by artists such as Carlo Cignani, Francesco Trevisani, and Andrea Pozzo. This collection, unique in the Marche region, offers visitors a fascinating journey through the art of drawing between the Renaissance and Baroque periods, revealing the sensibility of a refined intellectual from the Marche region and the role of Monte San Giusto as a center of cultural reception between the 18th and 19th centuries.
